Make Your Seed to Garden
1. Choose the right containers
Use any container (at least 2-3 inches deep, with drainage holes). DIY options: yogurt cups, milk cartons, paper cups.
2. The “potting soil”
Use fresh, sterile seedling potting soil. Avoid garden soil or used houseplant soil (to keep seedlings healthy/disease-free).
3. Planting
Sprinkle small seeds on soil, bury large ones; moisten soil, cover pots with wet paper/plastic dome (to speed germination), then remove cover when green shoots show.
4. Watering, feeding, repeating
As the seedlings grow up, you have to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Let the soil dry slightly between waterings. Remember to feed the seedlings regularly with liquid fertilizer.
5. Light
Seeds need 15 hours of light daily (use a timer). For windowsills, pick a south-facing spot; rotate pots to prevent leaning. Under grow lights: keep them 2-3 inches above seedlings, raising as plants grow. Note: Seedlings need darkness to rest too.
6. Move to outdoors
Don’t move seedlings directly outdoors. 1 week before planting: place them in a sheltered outdoor spot for a few hours daily (bring in at night). Gradually increase sun/wind exposure over 7-10 days. A cold frame works well for this.
